The Islands Tremiti are an archipelago of the Adriatic sea site to around 12 nautical miles to north of the mountains of the Gargano (Lake of Lesina). The small archipelago is constituted by the islands of St. Nicola, St. Domino, Cretaccio, Caprara and, to around 11 miles from these, from the island of Pianosa. In 1932 the archipelago became common autonomous with the denomination of Commune of Islands Tremiti, besides from 1989 it is also sea riserve.
Every year around a million tourists they arrive here for seeing the crystalline waters, a true paradise for the underwater immersions.
The Tremiti, between history...
Inhabited already in antiquity (IV-III century to.C.), the islands for centuries were above all a place of confinement. In Roman epoch, the August emperor exiled here his nephew Julia which, after twenty years, died. In the 780 Charles Magno exiled Paul Diacono which, however, succeeded in running away.
In the 1843 king Ferdinando II of the Two Sicilies, with the intent to repopulate the islands, deported vagabonds and criminals common of the Neapolitan slums, so it began a second colonization of the Tremiti. In 1911, around 1.300 Libyans were confined to the Tremiti and they opposed to the Italian colonial occupation.After one year, around 400 of they was dead.
In the epoch of the fascism, the archipelago kept on developing its function of confinement, there was also here the future President of the Republic Sandro Pertini. The history of the archipelago is nevertheless tied up above all to the historical stories, politics and economic of the abbey of Saint Maria to Sea (defined by Émile Bertaux the Montecassino in the middle of the sea) that a possession of the abbey of Montecassino remained for about one century despite the incessant applications of autonomy of the religious of Tremiti.

Even if we know that popular imagination has crowned of suggestions every place of the islands...
The name of the archipelago is tied up to that of the hero Diomede, in fact, in antiquity, the islands had called Islands Diomedee (Insulae Diomedeae).
The legend wants that the islands were born for hand of Diomede, which threw in sea three gigantic rocks that he had brought with itself from Troia and these rocks mysteriously resurfaced in the form of islands (St. Domino, St. Nicola and Goatherd). Here the hero died leaving his treasure and...
